Ama Keng-from pictures not posted.

Ama Keng on Lim Chu Kang Road, a place I stopped off many years ago as a young soldier desperate for a cold drink after 4 days in the field I remember thinking even then what a far out ulu place this was. Years later I came back with some friends and we stopped off for a another drink and a potter around the hardware shop that was filled with equipment that no Singaporean would ever need use on our very much non agricultural land. The people have gone, the shops, the homes, the laughter, the problems, the neighbours everything gone except the shell that is ama keng.

You would almost expect to see the mushroom cloud behind the buildings eh. I found this image to be rather poignant .

Like silent artillery guns abandoned in the field of conflict once the battle has ceased and combatants on both sides retire to lick their wounds.

The market.

What is it about man that compels him to make his mark.

I found the empty houses devoid of any semblance of family life or individuality. At least that's what I thought at first, but each empty unit was different from the next. From the colour of the paint on the walls, to the type of flooring, you can just feel some of the flats still have that sense of house "proudness" their previous occupiers had.

Someday when the world is void of mankind and our skyscrapers stand testament to the folly that was human kind, nature and its many arms would have reconquered her world. Life always finds a way doesn't it.

Signs of life, Military life.
Empty houses, windows with no glass and doors with no locks and no reason for them. A shell of a once thriving little community. A shell of a once warm home. I wonder about the people who lived here, who grew up here and from here launched into life, school, work, marriage, parenthood and the whole gamut of human experience a person growing up in Ama Keng could expect.
A very basic design as far as public housing goes, a couple of low rise slab blocks wrapped around a market area, with some of the ground floor units being shop houses.

There will never be another place like this. I wonder if the people who lived here before come back just to look around and feel intouch with the past.

Sidebar-typos spelling areas are good for you. god bless.

Ubin baby.

Our little gang spent the night on Ubin again this weekend. We stayed at the Celestial Resort. Its much improved from a couple of years ago, the room was comfy and clean the air conditioner was nice and cold. I had a great time and I think i am renewing my love for this splendid little island. (by the way that stilt house is not the resort.)
:)
We popped back into the village for some grub, it was suprisngly pricey, but we were full and for us thats about all we can ask for
Above as the caption says is a shop, this shop has been around for years, the lady that runs it is now 85years old and from what i understand still going strong.
The village Temple
The Malay Coffee Shop at the entrance to the jetty has been around for as long as i have been going there which is for the past 24yrs.
:)
Surrounded by a small lake (for canoeing not swimming) and a short sandy beach the resturaunt leaves alot to be desired. So if your staying at the resort, byof or grab something from the village.
One of the former granite quarries on the island
just a note on the picture above, i used a feature on photoshop called equalize on it cause i liked how it looked after. I did the same for 3 pictures which i will identify with an @
The resort is flanked by a river on one side and the ubin straits on the other.
One of the many dogs that roam the village. (20years ago there were alot more of them)

The Ubin Lodge Jetty.(@)
My fav picture of the lot, i am refering to the above of course.

sidebar- a note of the pictures. none of these will win awards and they were never meant to.

A Great Weekend

What a busy weekend it was.
Friday, went out for a late night drive/walk/photography thingy with some of the boys, which ended with us playing computer games till 4 in the morning. :).
Saturday Morning, went for a concert put up by Caitlin's school. TLOML and i were both proud wrecks. tears were flowing, hearts were swelling it was a proud moment for us. Our little girl did a great job.
I cant remember what I did on Saturday night! I do recall having a couple of whiskey sour tumblers.
Sunday, went to DooMill Manor to help with some PC problems. Yes i was of no help. The cab ride over was lots of fun, Caitlin was in a cuddly mood which i love.
Back home for lunch with the Machado's, Phil and Megs were a great help as we cleaned the fish pond they really put in a lot of effort (Phil only 4 fish died) After they left we put up the Christmas Tree, watching our daughter put up the baubles and dangly bits all by herself was another very special moment for us, mother and daughter were both so very excited.

This weekend really brought home how much Caitlin has grown, from being in the belly to dancing on stage. It really is wonderfully beautiful to watch her grow, its a little bit sad as well but such is life. Like the sea it just keeps flowing

Midnight at Amoy and Club Streets. Ok so it was 10pm ...

People who know me well will know about my affinity for the building above, in fact they would know how much i love Amoy and Club Streets. I have blogged about this place before but having seen it change the way I have over the past 15years makes me feel rather old.iAh if only there was no pinching.

The famous Boon Tat Street or Japan Street as it was known before the war(ww2 in case you didnt know)

You may notice the same picture in black or white and colour, well its cause i cant decide which one i like more. Below and above, The Durgha Shrine

I took several different versions of the lantern parade, but i like the above cause it gives me a sense that they are moving forward.

I really enjoyed tonight. I didnt get many good shots but i had a great time doing what I love. I took alot of pics so i might just post more tomorrow.

My 1st Rule.

That's a little note i put on my office door for my staff. Today I made them read it out and tell me what they think it means before they could come into my office. After they read it I said ok now you have a problem. Have you thought of a solution ? Or is your first reaction I must tell Boss. 2 out of 3 of them went back and sorted it out themselves. The 3rd one wanted to take leave. lol That doesnt mean they cant come in and trash about ideas or concepts or problems they can, but there must be limits on how much of my time they can demand.

Rehash

Just some older pics to get me in the mood to shoot.
