Buns, Birds, and Baby :)

A very enjoyable weekend, though i now work on saturdays(half day) still managed to do quite abit with my little family. Yesterday was spend sorting out some issues with my pond, including the purchase of a nice cheap sucker fish and some meal worms(which we are going to keep till they become darkling beetles) This morning we went for a picnic at the botanical gardens, we stopped off and picked up some really nice pastrami, bread and as can be seen from the above a sugar coated rasberry jam filled bun for Caitlin.

This is a rant.

I think i always hated people who lied to me or tried to, but i think what i really hate or rather the type of people i really hate are stupid people and i dont mean people with low IQ these people are ok i mean People who cant hold a conversation, people who sit there slack jawed and stupid looking with no contribution to the conversation what so ever, and its not because they cant or are too dumb to think its just that they refuse to. You know the type you have met them before, at dinners or a party you stand there looking at slackjawed dumbo for two mins wondering what the hell is wrong with that guy or girl.

The other type of person i cant stand is normally younger, the guy or girl who lives at home, is supported wholey by their parents but demand the right to make decisions for the household as if it were their own. The kind of idiot who eats, shops, studies and parties through their parents money and at the end of the day does not give them any respect or worse demands respect from the rest of the world cause hey look at me i am loaded ok, i got the fancy clothes or the fancy ride. My question to these idiots is the "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE" you wanna talk the talk but your folks walk the walk.

oh oh oh got 1 more--real annoying one. You call them up "hey we are going for a movie tonight, you wanna come?" IDIOT"whose going" YOU"john paul ringo and george" IDIOT "oh I cant i got dinner in marsling" so why the hell didnt you say that in the first place. How about senario number 2 You"how about dinner tonight, where shall we go?" IDIOT"anywhere can" YOU"ok how about pizza" IDIOT"Again? dont want lah" YOU" SO where YOU want to go?" IDIOT"anywhere can"

How about this one YOU"what time you want to meet" IDIOT"4pm" YOU"of but i that means i will have to rush abit but ok i will be there at 4" after you rush out of work so that you wont be late you get there at 4 and at 430 you get a msg IDIOT" JUst left be there in 10mins" or my other fav they just waltz in at 430 like thats how its supposed to be.

Well let me tell you idiots- you can go in your fancy parent bought car to anywhere for dinner with whoever and turn up at any damn time you choose cause i wont be there.

Note because at the point of writting this i am rather cheesed off you are going to find more typos. I dont care.

Teamwork and other issues

You ever notice that the same people who talk about teamwork in your office are the very same people who screw you over? Their version of teamwork is you do what they think you should do, no matter how dumb it is . I have noticed that these same people who always say "down here we work as a team" are also the most likely to be playing little games in office politics.

WHAT THEY SAY
Here we work as a team

WHAT THEY MEAN
Screw you, i have been here longer so just sit there and do what i say while i try and undermine the trust others have placed in you.

Needless to say these people can be very successful until the time comes where they have to prove their worth and all their flaws are exposed. Needless to say their protectors are exposed as well, the sheer stupidity of gossip, lies and pushing of responsibility in a work environment means more time is spent playing games instead of doing work.
I also notice that these games are often played by low level coolies who tend to hero worship someone in management and do their bidding and always exaggerate minor issues. These trouble makers like to sow the seeds of discord and when confronted play a simple game of "oh but the manager asked me to report" "or oh the system here is like that" implying that the system is at fault not the individual. The managers who pander to these weak willed individuals who hero worship them are seriously flawed as well, they encourage a culture of fawning and the currying of favour and will take anything the "worshiper" says as gospel truth...that is until it becomes in-convenient to have a sniveling lackey loiter around.

How do you handle these problems? Well you can either ignore it and hope it will go away, you could say i will allow my work to stand for itself. This can work, if you didnt have the "Manager" above you who wants the lackey to help put you on the defensive, the manager who could not perform in your job and so is threatened when you performing better then them in the same post. So allowing your work to stand on its on is a long term hope for the best solution.

You could go higher up and bypass your immediate superior. This has potential provided you have an enlightened higher up to seek redress or understanding from. In most cases they will say settle it yourself or ask the "manager" and be told oh him he is a trouble maker according to my lackey he is giving alot of problems.

You could as i do try and create concensus with a majority of people you work with, above and below you. Show them that both your work and your attitude are an asset not a hinderance. These means taking credit for work that you have done, and done well. Also it means sharing the credit with your staff who have performed beyond expectations . IT means selling yourself but in an honest and humble way, as well as selling your staff without selling out yourself. If you or your staff make a mistake make sure you take responsibility for it but if the mistake is not yours do not throw yourself on yoursword or your staff to the wolves. Concentrate on rectification and ensuring no repeats.

The above option is not sustainable, how long are you going to keep clean when your surrounded by mub. IT is an option only if there is a run out date on your service with these people. You do not leave with a bad taste in your mouth but the success of your efforts. The only way to stay clean in a mud hole is not get in. SO ask for a transfer, or let senior management know your are planning to leave and the circumstances that brought you their. Do not play games by saying i want to resign because of them, and then not follow through. There is only one rule in bargining and that is you must be prepared to leave the item on the table and walk away.

There is one final option, i call it the american option that is to take a sub machine gun and go crazy, but i stress if you are the one with the sub machine gun then you are the one with the problems.

A walk backwards.

Its been an eventful couple of weeks to say the least, 2 trips to bintan and a sisters island weekend.
I love both places, they both evoke similar emotions in me, the feeling of separation of all that is stressful on the mainland, bills ..work..work bills. Nothing else is a problem, life is grand aside from these few items and much like the folks who lived through the great depression by hiding out in cinemas, i hideout at the beach. Bintan, with its clear blue waters and clean beaches, friendly staff, comfortable beds, room service and air-conditioning is a great getaway. The first half a day or so i am there i keep checking my phone, in case work calls and i am needed after a couple of hours i chuck it. IF they need me that's just too bad. I feel it all just drain away and am able to relax. The moment of return and we get back to singapore i feel that weight on my shoulders once again. But lets get back to the bintan for a bit, i went in July with the boys and we spent our time playing frisbe and snorkelling (the weather was pefect) and it was a great little holiday. Bounce ahead to august and Tloml and i went without Caitlin which felt abit odd, we had a really great trip with our little walks and our long talks. Didnt do any snorkelling or not much but we did feed the fish alot....very relaxing.

Moving down the line we find me and the gang back on sisters island, its been around 4-5yrs since we have been back and boy was i excited. I love that place, the first night, there was no on else on the island and it was paradise. Part of the joy in going camping nowadays are the elaborate meals we tend to have, from pasta at dinner to bacon and eggs for breakfast and not forgetting a very well cooked roast chicken at lunch time(one year we even had roasted leg of lamb). This year marks the 19th year i have been organizing these little camping trips, i started when i was 16 and till today i get excited just thinking about another trip. We have always gone local, from the early years on Pulau Ubin(it was so clean and peaceful) to St Johns Island and then to Sisters Island(in between we hit, pulau hantu and lazarus). Next year is the 20th Anniversary of my little adventures and i think i shall paln a few little trips.
This time we brought 3 newbies to the island and i thinkt they like it too, its nice to keep the traditions alive.
